The home of our Baker Mallett Head Office is in Warrington and as we like to boast about our head office, we thought we would share a few fascinating facts about our region:
ONE: Our head office
Our Head Office is located at The Base, Dallam Lane, Warrington which is a 50,000 sq ft grade ‘A’ office building in the town’s centre.
TWO: The Wire
In the 1700’s and 1800’s the wire industry was highly significant to Warrington and this reflected in the nickname “The wire” which was given to the areas sports clubs and radio station.
THREE: Warrington Wolves
Warrington being referred to as ‘Wolves’ comes from a poem which was written following a defeat to rivals Widnes. Founded in 1876, they have been crowned three times as league champions, and have won the Challenge Cup nine times, they’ve also picked up many others honours. The team are nicknamed ‘The Wire’, short for ‘wirepullers’ in reference to the major industry of the town. The best part is, we have a view of the stadium from our office!
FOUR: Second World War
Warrington was the location of the Burtonwood RAF base, which was the largest US Army Air Force airfield outside of the US.
FIVE: The Golden Gates
The Golden Gates were intended for Queen Victoria’s Sandringham home in Norfolk after being made for the International Exhibition of 1862. The Queen was meant to see them for the first time at the exhibition however the Queen’s courtiers diverted her due to seeing a statue of Oliver Cromwell (who had signed King Charles I’s death warrant) through the gates.
It became hard to find a buyer for such grand gates but one of the town’s earliest councilors was able to buy them and bring them to Warrington to stand at the front of the town hall lawn. They were officially opened in 1895.
AND FINALLY:
We are now settling back into our home and are completely COVID safe. If you would like to meet with our Business Development Manager Jon McAlister to talk about the region and how we might work together, please email jon.mcalister@bakermallett.com to arrange a time.
The kettle’s always on at The Base, come and say hello!
